Old Palace of John Whitgift School

Old Palace offers students a unique and stimulating environment within the beautiful grounds of our historic, Grade 1 listed site.

We have high expectations for every student, both Prep and Seniors, and girls enjoy a first class, academic education together with a wealth of opportunities. This enables them to develop as an individual through an outstanding extra-curricular and enrichment provision.

We are very proud of the wide range of different clubs, activities, trips and events that the school provides across a whole range of areas including music, sport, dance, drama and so much more.

Each and every student is well supported as they move through the school. Our vibrant and diverse community stimulates girls to develop and flourish in ways beyond the reach of a conventional education.

We aim to equip our students with the confidence, skills and knowledge needed to lead independent, successful and happy lives in an ever-changing world. We prepare them for a future where they will need to shape their own careers and have the ability to take initiative and shoulder responsibility; something which will be key to their future success, both as members of society and their own personal fulfilment.

At Old Palace, we believe that a positive relationship between the School and our parents is essential in the provision of excellent education, and we work hard to keep parents involved in their daughter’s education. This includes regular information evenings and parent workshops covering a wide range of topics to help parents support their daughters.

Our Nursery, Pre School and Preparatory School are blessed with gloriously spacious grounds in Melville Avenue, South Croydon. Extensive facilities include a full size running track/field, purpose-built gym, DT rooms, science labs, art studio, food tech room and bright, modern classrooms.

Our Senior School is based in Central Croydon in buildings which date from 1463. More recent additions include our prize-winning Cathedral building (c 2000), indoor swimming pool, dance studio, Sixth Form centre, netball courts, science block, Shah building and courtyard gardens. Playing fields are just a short drive away.

Old Palace Nursery, Pre School, Preparatory, Seniors and Sixth Form are blessed with first class facilities and an enthusiastic team of high-calibre staff. For all who embrace the many opportunities presented, Old Palace will reward them with a happy, memorable and empowering education.

Bursaries & Scholarships

The John Whitgift Foundation currently gives financial support to 48% of students, totalling more than ÂŁ5 million a year, at its three schools; Old Palace (girls): Trinity (boys): Whitgift (boys).

At Old Palace, bursaries are awarded at two entry points: Year 7 and 12 and must be made at the point of application before the November deadline. Bursaries are awarded on the basis of performance in our entry exam and interview and are subject to income levels set by the John Whitgift Foundation.

Bursary applications must be made in advance of the entrance examination in January.

Scholarships are a financial contribution towards school fees awarded by Old Palace, based on exceptional talent either academically, in a specific subject area e.g. music or all round. Scholarships are awarded for entry into Years 7 and 12.

Scholarships can be of a value up to 50% of the school fees.

All students sitting the January Year 7 Entrance Examination will automatically be considered for an Academic scholarship.
