Sheffield Girls’ GDST

Sheffield Girls’ opened its doors in 1878, and since then we have been empowering girls to take on the world.

Our approach has always been forward thinking and from the outset we didn’t teach girls to know their place, we taught them to find it. Our dedication to preparing girls for their future has been a priority since the beginning.

We are the leading independent school for girls aged 4-18 in Yorkshire, welcoming pupils from all backgrounds and from a wide geographical area which covers South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire. Our school thrives on the rich cultural and social mix of our girls who flourish in the friendly and nurturing environment we provide.

Our GCSE and A-level results are consistently the highest in the region. In 2022, 67% of GCSE grades achieved were A*/9/8. At A Level, 80% of grades were A*/A.

Our mission statement is “Teaching her everything so she can be anything”. We want each of our girls to receive a broad and balanced education that will allow her to achieve anything she sets out to do.

Life at Sheffield Girls’ is about trying new things and learning new skills, both in and outside of the classroom. One of the real attractions is the opportunity to take part in a broad and vibrant range of extra-curricular activities. We believe this is key to providing a well-rounded education and helping our girls with their own personal growth. There are clubs and activities to suit every girl across the school, enabling them to learn something new and nurture their talents and skills.

We have three school values: Kindness, Courage and Positivity. We want our girls to be positive. Positive in the way they approach their learning, positive in the outlook on life, and positive in their aspirations for the future. We want our girls to be kind. Kind to others, kind to themselves, and kind to the world they live in. We want our girls to have courage. Courage to stand out from the crowd, courage to speak up for what is right, and courage to push herself that little bit further.

We aim to nurture a love of learning and curiosity in our girls that encourages them to explore, question and challenge. We want our girls to be confident, to flourish and be ready to take their place, and make a difference, in an ever-changing world. We want our girls to be proud. Proud of themselves, proud of each other, proud to be forged at Sheffield Girls’

Bursaries & Scholarships

Sheffield High School for Girls is part of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST), the largest group of independent girls’ schools in the UK.

As a charity, the GDST aims to seek out the brightest, most deserving girls for bursaries and scholarships so that the largest possible number of talented girls can benefit from a GDST education. In particular, it aims as far possible to focus its support on girls for whom the chance of a GDST education would be a transformative, life-changing prospect.

The bursary scheme is managed and administered by the GDST, which are funded via charitable partnerships, donations and legacies from former pupils, their parents and other friends.

Bursaries are usually awarded to pupils in the top 30% of performance in the entrance examinations. All bursaries are means-tested and their value is related to the income and financial resources of the pupil’s family. Bursaries can range from 30% up to a maximum of the full published fees.

We aim to assist as many families who qualify for bursaries as possible; however, given the demand, we are not able to offer support to all those who qualify.

Scholarships are awarded on merit, irrespective of financial means. Offers are made based upon performance in the entrance examinations or audition for Year 7, or in the case of Sixth Form scholarships for outstanding ability demonstrated in individual subjects and disciplines.

A Scholarship can be combined with a bursary where there is financial need. Music and Sport Scholarships are available for entry into Year 7 and Sixth Form.
