Donna Stevens says:
“The Girls’ Schools Association congratulates all pupils receiving their GCSE results, today. These achievements are the culmination of years of effort, perseverance, and commitment from students, their families, and their teachers.
Girls have, once again, demonstrated their brilliance with 25.7% achieving grades 7 to 9 overall and more girls than last year excelling in science. It is heartening to see that girls also continue to shine in the arts, humanities and sport with increases in top grades for History, Geography, Art & Design, Drama, and PE.
As many now move onto Sixth Form, our girls’ schools will continue to supercharge an educational advantage for young women. Girls attending an all-girls’ sixth form are significantly more likely to study mathematics and science at A Level than their counterparts in co-educational schools; 2.9 times more likely to take Further Mathematics; 2.3 times more likely to take Physics at A Level; 2 times more likely to take Economics at A Level; and more likely to take other sciences. This is testament to both young women’s talents and to the schools that have no glass ceiling in the classroom; places where every subject, every opportunity, every leadership role is open; places where young women can unleash their full potential to shine in areas where women are still underrepresented.
Girls’ schools continue to give young women the space to thrive, take risks, and aim high – I’ll be looking out to see what this savvy cohort does next!”
