Misinformation and conspiracy theories rising rapidly in schools, with teachers feeling underprepared (March 2026)

A new report from The Commission into Countering Online Conspiracies in Schools finds growing exposure to conspiracy beliefs and misinformation among pupils, with 38% of parents saying their child has raised a conspiracy theory, up from 28% the previous year. Teachers report increasing challenges managing these issues, often without sufficient training or confidence, while younger pupils are also being affected. While many young people initially enjoy arts subjects, participation drops sharply through GCSE, post-16 and higher education, highlighting how school experiences and perceptions of risk shape long-term career pathways and widen social inequalities.

Longitudinal research from UCL finds that pupils’ subject choices at school are associated with their political attitudes later in life. Students taking humanities and arts subjects were more likely to support socially liberal parties, while those studying technical or business-related subjects tended towards more right-leaning views. The study highlights how classroom experiences, not just background or qualifications, can shape young people’s worldviews and long-term civic engagement.

A survey by the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) finds rising concerns about racism and community tensions, with 38% of leaders reporting that students or staff fear racial harassment or attack, and 40% saying incidents have increased over the past year. The findings highlight the role of social media and political rhetoric in fuelling division, alongside widespread reports of sexism (81%) and other forms of discrimination affecting school communities.

68% of wealthy UK parents making financial sacrifices to afford private school fees after VAT changes (February 2026)

The latest Saltus Wealth Index shows confidence among high-net-worth individuals in the UK economy has fallen from 66% to 59% over the past six months, with taxation, inflation and economic uncertainty cited as key concerns. Rising education costs are also having an impact, with more than two-thirds of affluent parents saying they have made or plan to make financial sacrifices to maintain private schooling, and 7% reporting they have already withdrawn their child due to increased fees.

A new industry report from MakeUK finds UK manufacturing remains globally competitive, with nearly half of manufacturers viewing the UK as more competitive than the US and Germany and 86% generating export revenue. However, skills and workforce gaps are cited by a third of firms as the main constraint on growth, highlighting the importance of strengthening STEM education and career pathways – particularly for girls, who remain underrepresented in manufacturing and engineering fields.

95% of women’s health creators report censorship of medically accurate content online (June 2025)

A new CensHERship white paper on digital moderation finds that women’s health information, covering topics such as menstruation, fertility, menopause and postpartum care, is frequently removed, restricted or down-ranked across major online platforms. The report argues that inconsistent moderation systems disproportionately censor women’s health content, forcing many creators to self-censor and potentially limiting public access to important health information.
