St George’s School, Edinburgh

Situated ten minutes from the heart of Edinburgh’s West End on a beautiful parkland campus, St George’s provides an outstanding private education for today’s young women.

Designed exclusively for girls, we are the only independent, private all-through girls’ school in Edinburgh (from 3-18 years). St George’s was founded by pioneering women who were passionate about achieving equal opportunities for their students. We are still pioneers in women’s education, and we never see gender as a barrier to our girls’ aspirations.

At St George’s your daughter will encounter opportunities and empowerment in equal measure. This powerful blend will allow your daughter to find her voice and develop independence of thought. They’ll offer her meaningful positions of responsibility from an early age, create a ‘YES SHE CAN’ mindset, and show her that the only ceilings are those in her mind.

Our academic curriculum is a unique mix of GCSEs at 16 followed by Highers and Advanced Highers in the Sixth Form. The academic rigour and flexibility that this blend of the two systems gives ensure breadth whilst developing the valuable study skills and work ethic these courses require. Almost all of our sixth form go on to take degree courses, some after a gap year, and our destination of leavers is published on our website.

With a Junior School size of around 180 girls (and a whole school of 720), St George’s is relatively small though the Upper School and Sixth Form are substantial. For their primary education girls are taught in small classes – but, at around 16 – 19, big enough to provide interest and dynamism.

Top standards are expected of all St George’s girls and the high level of individual attention they receive enables them to achieve good results. Examination results have been consistently outstanding over many years and we are regularly in the top handful of the Scottish Independent Schools for our Advanced Higher results.

The School received an excellent report from Education Scotland. It was awarded the highest possible grading of ‘excellent’ in three categories.

The school is recognised for its pioneering International Exchange Programme: students enter into exchange programmes with schools in many different parts of the world.

Boarding is popular and Houldsworth House provides a comfortable home-from-home within the school for up to 60 girls.
