Girls thrive at St Mary’s School for Girls, Colchester, where a dynamic, girl-friendly academic curriculum is balanced with exciting sport, drama, music, art and extra-curricular activities to encourage happy girls to get the most out of their education and to achieve the best GCSE results in North Essex.
St Mary’s is a caring school, where every girl is known and valued and no-one falls through the cracks. Academic lessons are taken seriously, but there is a lot of fun and laughter too. From the nurturing Early Years teachers to the older girls who take their younger ‘buddies’ under their wings, each member of the St Mary’s community plays an active part in the happy, vibrant life of the school.
St Mary’s is non-selective on entry and it’s testament to the quality of the teaching and the supportive atmosphere at the school that girls strive to exceed their own expectations and attain high academic standards. Girls at St Mary’s Lower School achieve SATs results well above the national average, while in 2013 St Mary’s GCSE candidates achieved 96% passes at grade A*-C, topping the league table for independent schools in North Essex, and placing the school second of all independent schools in the county for the second year running.
But at St Mary’s it’s recognised that school is not only about exam success. Girls of all ages develop their artistic and creative talents and there are regular concerts, drama and dance productions and art displays. Girls are encouraged to lead healthy, active lifestyles and there is a huge choice of clubs, sports and activities – from karate to Indian dance in the Lower School to crafts and team training in the Senior School – to help girls to discover talents and spark interests that could well last a lifetime.
Above all, St Mary’s is a happy, caring school, where academic standards are high and every girl is supported and encouraged to flourish as an individual.
Bursaries & Scholarships
St Mary’s offers a wealth of opportunities for girls to develop their talents in a supportive, appreciative environment and Scholarships are offered to girls entering the school in Year 7 in Art, Music, Drama and Sport. Academic Scholarships are also offered to those who show great potential in the Entrance Assessment. Girls who take the St Mary’s Entrance Assessment are automatically considered for Miss Comrie Scholarships, which are held in very high regard by the school community and awarded only to girls who would benefit significantly from the St Mary’s education and who would make a substantial contribution to the life of the school. Those shortlisted attend interviews with the Principal and an independent panel.
Our friendly and inclusive approach creates a happy atmosphere in which girls enjoy school and love learning. Our small class sizes, exceptional pastoral care systems and unique tutoring system allow each girl to be known, understood, challenged and developed. We recognise that academic achievement is different for each pupil, so we work to ensure that every girl reaches her own personal potential.
St Mary’s Year 7 Scholarships are awarded solely on merit and in open competition. There is no financial assessment. Our scholarships are designed to spur on our pupils to realise their potential and often to exceed their own expectations.
