What is it really like to be a Reception child at Manor House School?
According to Mrs Argent, Reception Teacher at Manor House School, it begins with a world where imagination knows no limits and every day brings a new adventure.
“A cardboard box can become a rocket. A pile of cushions can turn into a castle. A stick discovered in the playground might become a magic wand, a dinosaur bone or the mast of a pirate ship, depending on who you ask,” she explains.
This sense of wonder lies at the heart of life in Reception, where four and five-year-olds embark on their first school experience and begin developing the confidence, curiosity and skills that will support them throughout their education.
“Reception is without doubt the most wonderful year for children and for their lucky teachers,” says Mrs Argent. “The children are curious about everything. They ask wonderfully unexpected questions and have an incredible ability to turn even the simplest moments into adventures.”
At Manor House School, learning is carefully designed to nurture children’s natural curiosity. One moment pupils may be learning a new phonics sound, and the next they are debating whether the Giant from Jack and the Beanstalk could fit through the classroom door. A maths lesson might suddenly evolve into a minibeast investigation after the discovery of an important-looking worm in the playground.
For Reception staff, these spontaneous moments are where some of the most meaningful learning takes place.
Celebrating Every Achievement:
At the beginning of Reception, everything feels new. From learning to write their name in pre-cursive script to recognising sounds, reading first words and counting classmates during morning registration, every achievement is a significant milestone.
Children also develop independence through everyday successes, such as fastening a coat zip, joining in a game with classmates, putting up their hand to share an idea or making their very first special friendship.
“These are the moments that matter most,” says Mrs Argent. “I love watching those sparks of confidence appear. The child who quietly observes suddenly becomes eager to contribute. The child who says, ‘I can’t do it’ discovers that they can. The child who arrives holding tightly onto a parent’s hand soon bounds through the classroom door full of excitement and stories to share.”
Learning Through Curiosity:
Reception children are known for their honesty, creativity and unique perspectives on the world. Their questions can be insightful, amusing and thought-provoking, often encouraging adults to see things from a completely different viewpoint.
For Mrs Argent, teaching Reception is not only about what children learn, but also about what they teach those around them.
“They remind us to be curious, to notice the world around us and to celebrate the little things. They teach us the importance of asking questions, having another go when something feels difficult and taking time to investigate something fascinating when it captures our attention.”
This approach helps to foster a genuine love of learning, encouraging pupils to explore, discover and develop resilience from an early age.
A Place Where Every Child Belongs:
At Manor House School, creating a nurturing environment is central to the Reception experience.
“I want every child to feel that school is a place where they belong, where they are happy and celebrated for being exactly who they are,” says Mrs Argent. “A place where they are listened to, where their ideas matter and where they feel safe enough to try, make mistakes and try again.”
The journey begins long before pupils officially start school. Throughout the year, Manor House welcomes prospective Reception children to special taster events designed to build confidence and excitement for the transition into school life.
This year, children attending a recent Reception Experience Day enjoyed activities inspired by Julia Donaldson’s Gruffalo Granny. The young visitors created Gruffalo-themed crafts, made imaginative “Gruffalo crumble” and “stew” for Granny, and demonstrated excellent cutting and sticking skills while creating their own colourful Gruffalo faces.
These opportunities allow children to become familiar with their new surroundings, meet teachers and future classmates, and begin looking forward to the exciting adventure that lies ahead.
The Start of Something Special:
At Manor House School, Reception is about so much more than early reading, writing and mathematics. It is about stories, songs, laughter, muddy hands, creative exploration, friendships and discovery. It is about helping children build confidence, develop independence and unlock their potential in a happy and supportive environment.
As Mrs Argent reflects: “There is something incredibly special about sharing those first steps of a child’s school journey and working in partnership with families. Watching confidence grow, friendships blossom and personalities shine is one of the greatest privileges of teaching.”
Reception may be the youngest year group in the School, but it is certainly not small in character.
Every day is filled with big imaginations, big questions, big feelings and very big adventures, laying the foundations for a future of learning, discovery and success.
