Gold Medal in Gymnastics – Another Win for Stormont

Gold Medal in Gymnastics – Another Win for Stormont

24 March 2022

Stormont U9 team win The National ISGA (Independent Schools’ Gymnastics Association) 4 Piece Championships at Haberdashers’ Boys’ School, the venue for this prestigious competition. An early start for a Sunday but well worth the short journey from Potters Bar to Elstree, Hertfordshire. Mrs Portsmouth and Mrs Curley were confident the girls would be placed and are chuffed that the girls were such good competitors and worthy winners yet again.

Not only did the whole team perform well, Arabella D took the U9 Individual Gold medal and Christina A, the Bronze! The Set Vault (handstand flat back) judge awarded Arabella 9.8 which is an amazing score for a nine-year-old. The U11s came 4th overall with Sophie P placed 5th.

This title comes on the back of both teams competing in The National ISGA Novice, 2 piece at Lady Eleanor Holles School, Hampton in November, 2021. At the 2 Piece Championships, the girls participated in the Set Floor and the Voluntary Vault.

Gymnastics is included in PE lessons from Reception to Year 6 at Stormont. There are gymnastics camps in the holidays and after school gymnastics clubs for all ages. There is also a club at weekends run by one of the parents at the school. In fact, the Johnston Sports Hall was originally opened by Olympic medal winner, Beth Tweddle, in 2009 so its credentials are long established. Many winners and participants have trod the stairs down to the sports hall over the years.

Mrs P, Head of PE, said, “This is a fantastic result for such talented girls, I could not be prouder of their achievements. It is also a wonderful way to celebrate my years at the school before I retire in the summer. I know that my replacement will carry on the excellent training and tuition. I’ll hand over with a sad heart but a huge smile in the knowledge that Stormont will continue to be an outstanding school for sports and an all-round education for girls.”

The cups, plate, medals and certificates awarded were all celebrated in the end of term assembly. Well done girls.
