STEM Stars Light Up GCSE Results Day at Harrogate Ladies’ College

24 August 2023

Pupils at Harrogate Ladies’ College are today celebrating an outstanding set of GCSE results which saw stellar grades in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) subjects.

Over seventy-five per cent of all grades across Physics, Biology and Chemistry at the school were the top 9-7 grades. Overall 57% of all grades were 9-7, 36% were 8-9 and 16% were grade 9.

Over 60% of pupils at the school achieved five or more top 9-7 grades.

There were strong results across all subject areas including Languages where 100% of French grades were 9-8; Humanities where 79% of Geography grades were 9-7; and Creative Arts where almost 90% of all Textiles grades were 9-8.

A total of 7 Textiles pupils at the school have also been individually congratulated by the Exam Board for being among the highest performers in the country.

Principal, Sylvia Brett said the results in STEM subjects were particularly impressive.

“Our results were excellent across all subjects, but as a girls’ school, I’m particularly pleased that we’re leading the way in STEM, an area where women are still hugely underrepresented in the careers market. If we want to change this, we need to inspire and encourage girls while they are still at school.”

“I’d like to take this opportunity to recognise our outstanding teachers. Their commitment to the pupils and to the school is truly remarkable and I hope that they are all celebrating today as well!

“We’ve watched these pupils grow and develop, some of them since they joined our Pre-School at the age of two, into confident, determined and resilient young people. The future is very bright in their hands!” she added.

Among those celebrating today at the school were pupils Maisy Lindley and Ella Marshall who both achieved a clean sweep of top 9-7 grades.

Maisy, who achieved six grade 9s and four grade 8s, said: “I’m so happy! I can’t quite believe the grades I got. I feel so proud to be here today celebrating with my friends.”

Ella, who also hit the high notes with two grade 9s, six grade 8s and two grade 7s said she felt proud of her results. “It’s felt like a long wait but it’s so exciting that the day has finally come and I’m really delighted. My teachers have been brilliant – they’ve given me so much support and guidance and that’s really made a difference to me.”
