New Sixth Form Centre commended by Oxford Preservation Trust

20 November 2023

We are proud to have been awarded a certificate of recommendation from the Oxford Preservation Trust (OPT) recognising our new Sixth Form Centre, the Benedict Building’s contribution to Oxford.

Head of Sixth Form and Higher Education, Heather Darcy, attended the OPT event in early November where the building was called “fun, clever and punching above its weight”.

Designed by local firm TSH Architects, the Benedict Building opened in January 2023 and is a physical articulation of our vision for St Helen’s Sixth Form: to create an environment for students that sparks their intellectual spirit and imagination.

Since opening its doors, at the beginning of the year, the Benedict Building has played host to a myriad of events and activities – from Just Dance competitions and karaoke parties to working lunches with Abingdon School, an alumnae networking event, MedSoc practice interviews and our ‘Business of Sport’ conference. The conference welcomed representatives from Rugby Football Union and the England and Wales Cricket Board to shine a light on the careers available to women in the sports sector.

At the building’s official opening ceremony in May 2023, our Chair of Governors, Kevan Leggett, summed up the project saying: “This is one of the most ambitious projects the School has ever undertaken and, on behalf of the Governors, I’m delighted that this beautiful new building – the Benedict Building – is now a reality. We look forward to seeing students enjoy all the opportunities this space will bring for many years to come.”
