St Margaret’s Pupils Get Ready for Spellbinding Performance

3 November 2023

Rehearsals for St Margaret’s School for Girls production of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” are well underway as cast and crew ready themselves to move into Aberdeen Arts Centre next week.

Running from 9th-11th November, the show, directed by head of drama Mrs Kirsty McGovern, tells the story of Ariel, a young mermaid princess who longs to live on land. Ariel falls in love with Prince Eric, a human, after rescuing him from a shipwreck. To achieve her wish of ascending from the sea, she makes a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, trading her voice for legs. With the help of her friends, including the colourful Flounder and the wise-cracking crab Sebastian, Ariel embarks on a journey to win Eric’s heart and regain her voice. Known for its memorable songs, including “Under the Sea” and “Part of Your World”, the popular musical is set to delight Aberdeen audiences with show stopping performances.

At St Margaret’s, drama is an essential component of life at the school, giving pupils the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills and imaginative thinking, speaking and listening.

Opportunities to take part in drama exist throughout the school and range from weekly timetabled drama lessons from P1 onwards, to full-scale theatrical productions. For those who wish to pursue drama beyond this, the school is delighted to offer pathways to follow certificated courses. Pupils enjoy the opportunity to study play scripts, ranging from the classics to the contemporary greats, and to investigate the most influential theatre practitioners of all time. The fully equipped black box drama studio gives girls at every stage the opportunity to explore technical theatre, including sound and lighting design.
