Prep School science teams triumph again – Heading to science quiz championships

23 January 2024

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Prep School scientists are off to Oxford! Both of their young Science Teams have made it to the final of the Quiz Club UK National Championships.

Having breezed through the area heats (plus a ‘best runners up’ online semi final for the second team), both teams will take on schools across the UK for the title of Quiz Club National Champions.

We caught up with the captains of each of our teams, Nye F and Bethan G. Nye said “I’m so excited to be in the final” with Bethan adding “The Exoplanet question was hard even though we studied them in science last year… It’s great we get to go to Oxford University for the final twice!”

This is the second year in a row that Monmouth Prep School Science Teams have made it to the final, with last year’s team making it to Oxford but just missing out on the prize.

About the event:

The Quiz Club National Championships boost confidence, broaden knowledge, and encourage great teamwork but above all are fantastic fun for pupils and their supporters.

Professional Quizmasters run the area heats and each school team are given wireless handsets to answer, with the show being projected on a huge screen with live scoring, making for great entertainment and building a competitive buzz around the event.

The heats comprise of 40 multiple choice questions with a wide range of difficulty levels. The experience is incredibly exciting for both the teams and the audience. The Quizmaster includes a great deal of additional information around the questions which participants absorb, broadening and improving their knowledge throughout the competition.

Dr S Wall, Head of Prep Science, said “I’m so incredibly thrilled for both of our science teams again to get through to the UK national final. These young scientists continue to amaze me with their science knowledge, especially considering the level of questions. It was exciting and nail-biting watching them in both the heats and semi-final. Every single one of them contributed to their team and I’m so very proud of them all.”

The finals are being held in the Summer Term at Oxford University.
