Jersey College for Girls (JCG) is proud to have been named a finalist in the prestigious Independent School of the Year Awards for its innovative and student-led approach to diversity, equality and inclusion. This approach places our young women at the heart of shaping the culture of the College and driving positive societal change both within the College and across the wider community.

The Independent Schools of the Year Awards are among the sector’s pre-eminent awards programmes, delivering national and international recognition for some of the nation’s leading schools. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony being held on Wednesday 14th October at The Law Society in London.

JCG’s submission highlighted the College’s pioneering work to end violence against women and girls (VAWG). Since 2020, students have played an active role in influencing public policy, contributing to the Jersey VAWG Taskforce, supporting island-wide awareness campaigns and delivering educational workshops to peers. Their work has previously received external recognition through the DIFERA Award and has been praised for setting a benchmark in student leadership.

JCG’s commitment to inclusion extends across all aspects of school life. Through initiatives such as the annual Festival of Cultures, the Modern Languages Buddy Reading Scheme, participation in Channel Islands Pride and support for international immersion students, the College celebrates diversity while fostering belonging and understanding.

In 2025, students also led the renewal of the College’s mural, working alongside artist Rory McCann to create a lasting celebration of inspirational women and the values of diversity and inclusion. The project was driven by JCG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Activism (IDEA) Prefects, who play a central role in championing equality, diversity and representation throughout the year.

JCG’s Principal, Carl Howarth, said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this prestigious national award. Belong is the most important of the College’s core values, and this recognition reflects the passion, commitment and leadership our students as they strive to build a better world. We are particularly proud that so many of the initiatives recognised are student-led, demonstrating the positive impact young people can have when they are empowered to shape their community and challenge inequality.

“The shortlisting celebrates not only the achievements of the College, but also the lasting impact these initiatives have on our students, helping them develop the confidence, empathy and leadership skills needed to become active citizens working to shape a more inclusive future.”
