Roedean School

Roedean combines the tradition and heritage of a school for girls founded in 1885 with dynamic teaching, an extensive co-curricular offer, exceptional accommodation following an £11million refurbishment, and modern facilities.

The school is easily accessible from London and the South, Gatwick airport is 30 minutes away, and it is the mix of local, London, and overseas girls which gives it a special and dynamic atmosphere. With its stunning and unique cliff-top position by the sea in Brighton, the girls have the space to grow up at their own pace here and realise their full potential; they thrive in this environment, happy and confident in their abilities.

As an academic school, we seek to inspire curiosity and a love of learning in all our girls. The strength of teaching at Roedean is that discussion and debate sit at the heart of learning. Lessons are thought-provoking and meaningful; the Sciences are as popular as the Humanities, and in all lessons girls thrive through collaboration, cooperation, challenge, and discussion with each other. Our girls are keen to think, to learn, to explore, and to develop intellectually, socially, and emotionally. The success of this approach is borne out by the fact that the girls achieve very highly, and go on to pursue their education at top institutions in the UK and beyond.

Our holistic vision of education also places a very high value on all the experiences that take place beyond the classroom, in Sport, Art, Drama, Music, and Dance, all of which make up an essential part of life at Roedean. The opportunity for girls to be able to excel in a number of different fields is one of the great gifts of Roedean, since it provides them with the space and time to devote to their passions, and all in one place. On-site facilities include the Chapel, cloisters, a flood-lit all-weather pitch, indoor swimming pool, professional theatre, cafés, dance studios, libraries, tennis and netball courts, cricket and football pitches, the Farm with sheep and goats, and acres of grounds and fields.

Roedean offers the kind of teaching, learning, and all-round experiences that enable every single girl to find her passion and voice, meaning every one leaves Roedean feeling that anything is possible. It is precisely this rounded education which produces independent and creative young women who will make their mark in the world. A Roedean education is a unique and wonderful experience.

Bursaries & Scholarships

Scholarships are central to Roedean’s ethos, and all girls are encouraged to strive to realise their potential. Roedean Scholars play a vital role in demonstrating, modelling, and championing the values which are at the heart of making Roedean an exceptional school. They challenge themselves to excel, and benefit greatly from this experience. We have high expectations of our Scholars, and, to support this, we provide them with tailor-made programmes, expertise, and guidance. Our aim is for Scholars to develop during their time at Roedean, to challenge themselves to exceed the high expectations they have of themselves, and to inspire their peers.

We expect our Scholars to have a specialism in one area, whether that be Music, Sport, Art, Dance, Drama or the Academic, but we also hope that they will be talented and dedicated in a variety of areas. We are looking for talented sportswomen who will lead on the pitch and on the stage; we want exceptional musicians who will also be highly skilled artists; we seek academics who can dance beautifully. Our Scholars will be leaders in our community, and will contribute to all aspects of school life.

At Roedean, we are also dedicated to widening access for local families. Each year we offer financial support to parents of gifted pupils whose circumstances would otherwise put Roedean beyond their reach. The Awards Committee has a specified sum available to award to pupils at their discretion each year. Meeting the baseline criteria for financial assistance is not the only prerequisite for receiving a bursary award: applicants will be assessed on their academic performance, as demonstrated in the entrance assessment papers and their school report, in order to best direct funding decisions.

Our Scholarships, Awards, Bursaries and Funding booklet will give you further insight into the scholarships and funding available at Roedean, the criteria and assessment for scholarships and the scholars’ programmes for UK-based students. For overseas-based students, please take a look at the Overseas Admissions pages of our website. If you wish to apply for a scholarship, do please contact our Director of Admissions, Mrs Diana Banham, on dba@roedean.co.uk or 01273 667626 before submitting an application. If you have, however, already spoken to a member of the Admissions team, please do fill out our online Registration Form if you haven’t done so already, and the relevant scholarship form.
