With 54.5% of all papers graded at A* or A, pupils at the Girls’ Division of Bolton School have recorded the School’s best set of results in recent years whilst bucking the national trend of boys achieving more top grades than girls. The percentage of passes at A* rose to 15.9% from 12.5%, as did the percentage of passes at A*-B which rose to 78.4% from 77%. 94.7% of all papers were graded in the A*-C category, up from 94% the previous year, and the overall pass rate was at 99.6%.
Headmistress Sue Hincks said: ‘I am delighted that the girls have done so well this morning and that they can now plan the next stage of their lives with confidence. The vast majority have received their first or second choice University offer and, for those who just missed out, staff have been in all morning ensuring that we can match girls with the best places in Clearing. Particularly pleasing are the A* grades in French and Spanish as these subjects have been in decline nationally and so Ofqual has taken steps to ensure that students are not disadvantaged by taking what are perceived as ‘hard’ subjects – I’m very glad that this work has paid off.’
Four girls achieved a full set of 3A*s or better – Kat Gramm, Priya Guhathakurta, Nadiya Hall and Neha Khimani. Kat Gramm also secured her place at Brasenose College, Oxford to study Medicine and Eloise Booth achieved grades allowing her to progresses to St Catherine’s College, Cambridge to read Spanish and Portuguese. As ever, there was lots of academic success alongside students juggling demanding extra-curricular activities and other demands, such as Caroline Blair, a keen singer and actor, who progresses to the Royal Academy of Music in London where she will study Singing. The School was particularly proud of one student’s success in the face of adversity, that of Olivia Blyth who, despite battling vision problems from birth, achieved A*AB grades and will study Law at Exeter.
A delighted Mrs Natalie Scanlon, a parent, took a moment to reflect saying: “My daughter, Niamh, has had an amazing time and will now study Economics at Newcastle; I can’t speak highly enough of the School. Miss Hincks, the Head, has been fantastic throughout.”
