Virtual Lessons and Carol Service at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools

17 December 2020

Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools held their traditional Lessons and Carol Service – albeit virtually.

Due to measures in place to reduce the risk of infection at the schools, the Chaplain, Reverend Clifford Swartz, delivered a special online service for pupils, staff, parents and friends.

Pupils and staff across the schools were filmed individually or in small groups in Year group bubbles and then the service was edited together as a whole service.

Monmouth School for Girls’ Sixth Form Choir, for instance, was filmed miming for their part in the service and then their voices added to the final version.

The girls’ Sixth Form Choir sang an Angel’s Carol, while Monmouth School for Boys performed Maria durch ein Dornwald ging, and Scots Nativity.

Monmouth School Girls’ Prep sang Once in Royal David’s City and Star Carol and Monmouth School Boys’ Prep performed Kindness (A raven flew to Bethlehem).

Reverend Swartz said: “This year it was a bit different due to the measures in place which meant we could not gather together in St Mary’s Priory Church or at St Peter’s Church, Dixton.

“But we still had the same objective – to worship our great God and king who, in humility, was born as a baby in Bethlehem.”

He added: “I want to thank everyone who made this year’s joint service possible under such unusual circumstances and I wish you all a very peaceful and happy Christmas.”
