Channing Junior School Publishes Unique Series of Books

11 March 2024

The Channing Characters are a series of woodland animals which represent the eight character traits that make up a Channing girl. The eight books were inspired by the stories written by Channing Junior School pupils and are illustrated by talented cartoonist, Paul Solomons.

Miss Hamalis, Head of Channing Junior School, commented, “The quote attributed to Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, ‘Character is destiny’, implies that destiny is not a predetermined outside force, but that our future is determined by our own inner character. If this is true, then helping children develop all the different elements within themselves that define their characters is crucial, and as vital as the education of knowledge. We asked ourselves how we could formalise this character education, essentially teaching our pupils the values or virtues that they will use every day to make decisions in their lives, and that is how the Characters came about. We are delighted that everyone at the school has embraced the Channing Characters so enthusiastically and the publication of these books will help enormously in embedding these traits in our pupils.”

Mrs Lindsey Hughes, Headmistress at Channing School, added, “At Channing we work incredibly hard to prepare our students for life within and beyond school. The foundations that are laid in the Junior School underpin the work in the Senior School to create confident, fearless learners ready to go out and have a positive impact on the world around them. I am delighted by the creativity and enthusiasm with which the Junior School pupils and staff have developed and embraced the Channing Characters and have thoroughly enjoyed reading these new books.”
