Haberdashers’ Monmouth School celebrates outstanding sporting success

11 March 2024

With multiple girls’ Hockey Teams reaching National Finals, the boys’ Football Team about to play in the finals of the ISFA knockout tournament and the U14s Rugby 7s team winning the West of England Tournament, both girls and boys at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools have been setting a formidable standard in the sporting arena.

Hockey:

Both Haberdashers’ Monmouth girls’ U18’s 1st XI and U14’s Hockey Teams have secured places in the National Regional Finals.

On Tuesday 5th March, the U18’s triumphed over Glantaf, Llandaff Cathedral, Brynteg, Christ College Brecon, and Brynhyfryd teams, topping the leader board and securing their place in the finals against Glantaf – the victorious team will claim the title of National Champions amongst all schools in Wales.

Sorrel Wilson, Head of Hockey, reflected on the U18’s achievement: “Every individual girl worked incredibly hard and fought right to the end of each match. They displayed, passion, determination and resilience and ended up beating teams who, in the past, we have struggled to beat.”

Hot on their heels, the U14’s Hockey Team also defeated the likes of Llandaff Cathedral, Milford Haven, Botwnnog and Tywyn, drawing with Howells School, to claim top spot and secure their place in the final against Howells School.

Wilson, who trains and accompanied both teams, shared, “They played some tough hockey in the semi-final rounds, and didn’t make life easy for themselves, however they displayed some intelligent and mature hockey and their passion and determination really shone through.”

Both Hockey Teams gear up to face their final opponents in the National Finals in Cardiff on Thursday 21st March.

Football:

The Monmouth 1st XI Football Team beat St Paul’s London in the semi-final of the Independent Schools Football Association knockout competition, securing their place in the final against Bancroft’s School. The final takes place at Beaconfield Town FC on Wednesday 13th March.

Mr Mark Tamplin, Master i/c Football, is incredibly proud of the boys, stating, “Back in September they started their journey in the National ISFA Competition, and 6 rounds later they have made it to the final. A large travelling crowd will be cheering them on all the way!”

Rugby:

The school has witnessed two fantastic wins for the U14’s and U12’s Rugby squads. The U14’s squad travelled to the West of England Rugby Tournament on Sunday 12th March, bringing home the cup after defeating Queen Elizabeth School, Kings Taunton, Bristol Grammar School, Millfield and Cheltenham College.

Adding to the excitement of their win, three Monmouth players, Felix Squirrell, Rafe Llewelyn and Morgan Boret were singled out of 16 teams by the Sevens Officials in the running for ‘Man of the Tournament’. In the end, Morgan Boret was awarded the title, a fantastic end to a tremendous day, leaving the entire team and supporters incredibly proud.

During the same week, on Wednesday 6th March, Haberdashers’ Monmouth School hosted the annual Monmouth School U12’s Rugby 7s Tournament. 19 schools attended from England and Wales to compete. Following a full-on day of matches, the tournament progressed to the knockout stages with teams competing for the Bowl, Plate and Cup competitions. Monmouth’s own U12’s team won the Bowl, defeating Bishop’s of Hereford School. Katerine Lady Berkley’s School won the Plate, and Ysgol Glantaf won the overall tournament, taking home the cup.

Mr Jon Despontin, Master 1/c Rugby, expressed his delight at the success of the day and Monmouth’s win, extending his thanks and congratulations to all the participating schools and staff who made the journey, refereed, and supported tirelessly throughout the tournament.

The recent achievements across Rugby, Hockey, and Football at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School stand as a testament to the dedication, skill, and teamwork of the student-athletes and sports staff. As students eagerly anticipate the upcoming finals in Football and Hockey, the entire school rallies behind them, wishing them the best of luck in their journey to victory.
