St Paul’s Girls’ School

St Paul’s Girls’ School is an extraordinary school, offering a classical yet forward-thinking education, which is rooted in a love of academic discovery and enriched by broad co-curricular provision, the kindest and most individual of pastoral care and a commitment to partnerships and service to others.

At SPGS, we fuse the brilliance of girls’ intellect with the power of possibility. We celebrate and cultivate these strengths, empowering girls to grow into their true selves. We believe that intellectually adventurous, socially engaged young women will make a difference to the world.

St Paul’s Girls’ School was named The Sunday Times’ Independent School of the Year by Academic Performance and London Independent School of the Year for Academic Performance in 2024, topping the national league table for the 11th time in 12 years.

Our broad and progressive curriculum places emphasis on creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship and is rich in opportunities to learn about new technologies and engage in cross-curricular projects drawing links between the digital world and other subjects. This aims to give students the skills and confidence to lead the way in a modernising and fast-moving world.

Pastoral care is central to our ethos. Ours is a warm and caring community, underpinned by a keen sense of energy and fun. We embrace a liberal ideology, with no uniform and few rules, and students are given the freedom to develop their individuality. A supportive network, grounded in small tutor groups and bolstered by peer support and an extensive wellbeing team, aims to ensure that all students feel happy and confident as they progress through their education. This sense of security and support enables students to embrace opportunity, to take risks and to develop their resilience.

Our rich and varied co-curricular provision caters to all passions and hobbies. Students find all sorts of things to grab their interest, from Improv Club to Dissection Society, from Junior Feminist Society to Gardening Club. There is always a wealth of music, art, drama and sports taking place at St Paul’s and plenty of opportunity for students of all ages to get involved.

We believe that engagement with the communities around us is vital. We are developing an overseas franchise that will enable students to work together and share ideas across the globe. At home, we are building partnerships to support and benefit the wider communities around us. Volunteering is an important feature of wider school life, with students spending time at homeless shelters, food rescue and redistribution centres, local primary schools and residential care homes. This sits alongside our highly successful bursary programme.

Bursaries & Scholarships

The provision of bursaries enriches our community in every way; it provides us with a wonderful opportunity to offer the full breadth of our education to talented students whatever their background, and to benefit the school beyond measure with their energy and inspiration.

A bursary is a means-tested award and is determined by the family’s financial circumstances, taking into account income, any realisable assets and other relevant circumstances. The level of assistance provided will depend on individual circumstances and the maximum value awarded is the full published fees. The number of bursaries we award for students who join us in Year 7 and Year 12 is at the discretion of the school and will vary each year.

Scholarships are also awarded to students for exceptional performance in music, drama or art. Scholarships at St Paul’s are honorary and will normally carry a nominal financial award. Scholarships are not means tested.

The following scholarships are available:

Junior Music Scholarships (11+) to the value of lessons in one instrument/voice, currently worth £957 per annum, tenable for five years when scholars will be able to apply for a 16+ scholarship in Y11 for their final two years at SPGS. Bursary students who are also awarded a music scholarship will receive the equivalent of lessons in two instruments/voice, currently worth £1,914 per annum, again tenable for five years.

Music exhibitions may also be awarded following auditions at the discretion of the Director of Music, but they carry no financial award, but will continue to receive the recognition, mentoring, and enhanced opportunities offered by the department.

Senior Music Scholarships (16+) to the value of lessons in one instrument/voice, currently worth £957 per annum, tenable for two years (choral awards up to the value of one lesson in voice may be available). External candidates must be successful in the Senior School entrance examination. Bursary students who are also awarded a senior music scholarship will receive the equivalent of lessons in two instruments/voice, currently worth £1,914 per annum, tenable for two years.

Senior Art Scholarships (16+) of the value of £250 per annum are offered to up to current students or external candidates who are currently in their final GCSE year and who, if applying from another school, have previously been successful in the Senior School entrance examination. Candidates take part in a workshop and are required to submit a portfolio.

Senior Drama Scholarships (16+) of the value of £250 per annum are awarded based on an audition, workshop and interview with our Director of Drama and other drama staff to candidates who show outstanding potential as an actor or director. Please note that scholarship candidates will often study drama at A level; however, those able to demonstrate a significant commitment to co-curricular drama will also be considered. Drama exhibitions of the value of £50 per annum are also awarded following an audition, workshop and interview with the Director of Drama.
