Bedford Girls’ School (BGS) has once again been recognised as one of the leading all girls’ independent day schools for sport, securing 8th place for girls sport in the School Sport Magazine Top 200 Sporting Schools for 2025.

This national ranking reflects the breadth, depth and quality of the school’s sporting provision, as well as the commitment and ambition of its students. Competing against boys’, girls’, mixed, day and boarding schools from across the country, BGS students have demonstrated the strength of the school’s sporting culture and the confidence fostered within an all girls’ environment.

Sport at BGS is characterised by high participation and high performance. In addition to PE lessons, students benefit from approximately 70 co-curricular sports clubs each week and take part in around 250 fixtures per term, ensuring opportunities for all abilities alongside clear pathways for those performing at regional and national level. The school’s Athlete Support Programme provides tailored mentoring for students competing at the highest levels, helping them balance academic success with sporting excellence.

A number of standout team performances have contributed to this year’s placing. The England Hockey U16 squad reached the National Final as Tier 1 Plate Runners-Up, while the U19s secured the ISHC Plate title. In lacrosse, both the U13A and U14A teams finished within the top 15 nationally, supported by further strong results across senior age groups. The school has also seen impressive national progression in netball, badminton and athletics, with students consistently representing at county and regional level. Alongside this, BGS continues to excel across a broad range of sports, including rowing, tennis, swimming, cross country and athletics, reflecting the depth and diversity of its sporting provision.

Mrs Mason-McLeod, Director of Sport at BGS, said: “We are proud to be recognised once again among the top all-girls’ independent day schools for sport. This achievement reflects the commitment of our students and the expertise of our staff. At BGS, we aim to provide outstanding opportunities for every girl, whether she is discovering a new sport or competing at the highest level.”
