Newcastle High School for Girls

Newcastle High School for Girls (NHSG) offers an unrivalled educational opportunity for girls in the North East of England and was awarded the Sunday Times North East Secondary School 2020, following a meteoric rise through the league tables.

Championing an all-girl education in the 21st century, girls at NHSG develop self-confidence, take intellectual risks, ask questions and make judgements during their most formative years without without gender barriers or stereotypes to impede them. Girls at NHSG learn without limits.

At NHSG, we give girls the freedom to find their own identity and to overcome the confidence gap that sees so many girls and women underestimating their own abilities. Most of all, we offer an outstanding academic education, always putting our girls first to make sure that every single girl is supported and grows into a bold and independent young woman, ready to take on the world – to be leaders, trailblazers and world-shapers.

To enable this, girls from the age of 3 to 18, enjoy a broad and varied curriculum alongside an exciting co-curriculum, all taught by staff who are specialists in the education of girls. Pastoral care is excellent and is given equal weight to the academic programme. The importance of equipping girls with the broader life skills and values that combine to make happy, healthy and fulfilling lives is a binding principle that runs throughout the school, and the sense of community is strong. All of this is delivered within outstanding facilities across the whole school, at both Junior and Senior schools, and the use of technology in teaching and learning sets NHSG apart in the range of opportunities created and offered.

Unique in the the North East, NHSG is one of the schools in the Girls’ Day School Trust family, the leading UK network of girls’ schools, which educates around 20,000 girls nationwide and is committed to a shared ethos of putting girls first. The expertise and forward-thinking approach to education of the Girls’ Day School Trust is shared throughout the GDST creating a wealth of possibilities for the girls which continue to open doors long into their adult life.

Bursaries & Scholarships

Bursaries

Both the Girls’ Day School Trust and Newcastle High School for Girls were founded by philanthropists committed to making outstanding education available to young women – a legacy we are proud to continue today.
We believe every girl who is bright and eager to learn should be given the opportunity to fulfil her potential regardless of financial circumstances, therefore we offer a limited number of bursaries to assist girls joining us in Year 7 and Year 12. Parents of pupils who are joining NHSG for the first time are required to complete the school entrance application form and tick the box requesting financial assistance. All bursaries are awarded for the duration of a girl’s school career at NHSG.

Scholar Awards

Available at Year 7 entry, these non-means-tested awards recognise academic excellence and are based on exceptional performance in our entrance examinations. Those awarded will receive a remission of school fees of up to 30% per year for the duration of a girl’s school career at NHSG.

NHSG Scholar Awards are reserved for girls who perform exceptionally well in our entrance examinations and demonstrate all-round academic ability. They are awarded to the highest ranked pupils based on their entrance examination results. There are a maximum of seven Scholar Awards available for up to a 20% remission of school fees. The actual number and amounts awarded will be dependent on the performance of pupils in our entrance examinations. All applicants completing our Year 7 entrance assessment are considered for a Scholar Award.

Exhibition Awards
Available at Year 7 Entry we offer Exhibition Awards with up to ÂŁ1,000 remission of fees per year for the duration of a girl’s career at NGSG. These are awarded to girls who are talented in either Sport, Music, Dance or Drama and the remission in fees is intended to support their development in the specialist area. Applicants must fulfil the criteria set out in our Awards brochure and complete the relevant application, after which they may be invited to an interview and demonstration or audition.
