A Wild and Wonderful Book Week at James Allen’s Preparatory School

7 October 2016

This year’s Book Week at the James Allen’s Preparatory School saw more than its fair share of wild and wonderful animals. We kicked off on Monday with the magical stage show Why the Whales Came based on the book by Michael Morpugo. This enchanting one woman show tells the tale of two children who live on the Scilly Isles at the start of WWI.

Tuesday saw Y3 and Y4 welcome Jennifer Gray who shared with us the story of her own cat Henry, the inspiration behind Atticus Claw, the infamous cat burglar. We learnt always look at those everyday objects around you, they might just be the inspiration you need to write a great story.

Abi Elphinstone visited Y5 and Y6 on Wednesday and amazed us with her real life encounters from flying golden eagles in Mongolia to rare sightings of wild cats in Scotland. These experiences inspired her to write her gripping adventure stories The Dream Snatcher and The Shadow Keeper. Offering helpful insight into creative writing, Abi told us to always look up at the world around you and never ever give up!

On Thursday Village Books popped in with a pop up book shop where everyone had a chance to browse and share their recommendations.

And then Friday saw the always eagerly anticipated Dressing Up Parade. Costumes were inspired and eye-catching; as well as flying cars and several boats, there was a plethora of wildlife from owls and pussycats to monkeys, tigers and roly poly birds.
