New Sports Complex and Boarding Refurbishment at St Mary’s Calne

New Sports Complex and Boarding Refurbishment at St Mary’s Calne

23 October 2017

Hot on the heels of a £10.5 million boarding refurbishment programme (the Lower Sixth Form House also won the West of England LABC Building Excellence awards for Best Educational Building), St Mary’s Calne has now commenced the build on a new, multi-million pound Sports Complex (to be completed in April, 2018).

The extensive boarding refurbishment programme included new Common Rooms, study spaces, new bathroom facilities and much-needed boot rooms for those muddy lacrosse boots! One of the Houses also had an extension built on to include some additional dormitories. House Staff facilities were also upgraded.

The new Sports Complex is now underway and will include a Sports Hall, an enlarged dance studio which can be divided into two smaller spaces, dry side changing rooms with showers for visiting teams, family/accessible changing facilities, a viewing gallery and improved staff facilities.

The Sports Complex will be an invaluable indoor sporting facility for the school, particularly when the weather is bad. The Sports Hall will offer opportunities for: badminton (4 courts), indoor netball, tennis and hockey, 5- aside football, cricket nets, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics and trampolining.

Sport plays a very important part in life at both St Mary’s Calne (and St Margaret’s Preparatory School). We strongly believe in the benefits of both individual and team sports and, whether an elite performer or a beginner, all pupils are encouraged to participate and develop, whatever their ability.  Learning to work and play as a team teaches trust, increases resilience and builds confidence and self-esteem, all valuable qualities which can be transferred to everyday life.

The pupils (and staff) are all looking forward to April, when the new Sports Complex will open!
