Members of the Talbot Heath tennis team had an exciting tennis session at West Hants Tennis Club recently when they shared the court with Wimbledon semi-finalist and former British No.1 Tim Henman. Tim was in Bournemouth with a host of other past and present tennis stars to mark 50 years since the first tournament of the Open Era.
14-year-old Hannah Smith and 15-year-old Abigail Tyler were lucky enough to play an exhibition match with Tim Henman and Miles Maclagan (former coach to Laura Robson and Andy Murray). The final score was a success for Hannah and Miles who beat Abi and Tim 13-11. Fellow tennis pupil Esther Adeshina missed out on the court play due to injury but was more than satisfied with a photo opportunity with Tim. She said, ‘It was an honour to meet so many inspirational tennis heroes and a very exciting day.’
Former Talbot Heath pupil, Virginia Wade, won the women’s open in 1968 and Ken Rosewall from Australia, won the men’s. They pocketed the first ever prize money – the men’s title with £1000 and the women’s £300; now fifty years on the gender pay gap is diminishing but equality in all sports is an issue that TH fully supports.
