Former Student Achieves Coveted University of Oxford Scholarship

8 February 2019

Sophie, who attended Cheltenham Ladies’ College as a day girl between 2013 and 2018, will join the University in autumn 2019 to read Linguistics & Modern Greek at Pembroke College. In doing so, she will join a thriving community of talented musicians from a wide-range of academic disciplines.

During her time at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Sophie was also awarded the College’s own Organ Scholarship, one of only very few available in schools in the UK.

The College’s Organ Scholarship is awarded to a student who is a promising organist and who also shows interest in developing choral accompanying and directing skills. Although already an accomplished musician, Sophie (who also plays the violin, viola and piano) had had no formal organ lessons before joining College, where she studied with Fiona Brown.

More recently, the Scholarship afforded Sophie the opportunity to have coaching in keyboard skills (sight-reading, transposition, harmonisation, choral score-reading, and improvisation) from the College Organist, Sarah Baldock, and support in choral directing from the Head of Vocal Studies, Oliver Parker.

Music is an enriching part of life at College and Scholars receive an excellent musical education tailored to meet their individual needs and ambitions. They play a central role in a range of ensembles and perform in a variety of concerts, internal Instrumental Prizes and the Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts.
