Over 200 students from Truro High School for Girls gave the stars of Strictly Come Dancing a run for their money last weekend as they blew away sell-out audiences at the school’s annual entertainment extravaganza, Dance Show LIVE!
From street dance to ballet, girls aged from 4 – 18 wowed their audiences with a packed programme put together in the first half of the school term.
The glittering production included 23 dance numbers, many of which had been choreographed by the girls themselves. Students also led large numbers of rehearsals in the run-up to the two performances as part of the Arts Award.
The Arts Award challenges students to get involved and take the lead in the world of the creative and performing arts helping them to develop into the cultural innovators of the future. Truro High is the only school or college in the county to offer the Gold Arts Award.
Routines ranged from a toe-tapping rendition of Broadway classic ‘42nd Street’ to a haunting lyrical piece inspired by living dolls and a 25-minute retelling of the Creation story by the school’s ballerinas.
Year 12 Lowena took the lead in choreographing an atmospheric nine-strong group number inspired by skeletons whilst Year 10 Hollie and Year 8 Rosie put together an adrenaline-pumped street dance number involving ten Year 7 and 8 students.
The school’s Upper Sixth rounded off the show with a dazzling tale of three unlucky robbers told through the medium of street dance, all choreographed by themselves.
Headmistress Mrs Sarah Matthews said: “It continues to impress me how phenomenally the girls perform on stage especially given the wonderfully inclusive nature of events such as these. I am tremendously proud of each and every girl involved – who could fail to be impressed by the fantastic standard of dancing on show and the initiative taken by so many to choreograph and produce pieces as well as perform?”

Dance is an important part of life at Truro High with Prep pupils given the chance to learn ballet, street dance and lyrical as part of their everyday curriculum with Clare Meardon, choreographer and Artistic Director for Savvy Studios.
Senior students have the opportunity to try out tap with professional dance specialist, Jacqui Riordan. They can also explore their talents with dance teacher, Miss Danyelle Fry, helping them learn new skills and choreograph their own routines in both classes and extra-curricular clubs.
