Royal High School Bath Dance Show inspired by a love of books

23 March 2022

The Royal High School Bath Dance Show, is an annual highlight in the School’s calendar. Held online during lockdown, last week’s performances were a chance for scholars and students with a passion for dance to demonstrate why dance is such a strength of the school. ‘Dancing through the pages’, featured dances inspired by books. The Show played to a full house in the school’s Memorial Hall and involved students from the Prep and Senior Schools.

A Dance Show is performed annually at Royal High School Bath with a wide range of styles from ballet to tap and jazz to k-pop. This year, girls representing Years 5-13 performed pieces inspired by a theme, storyline or character in a book from a range of literature including The Life of Pi, Matilda, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland and His Dark Materials.

The school’s Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) Dance Company, Senior Dance Company and Ballet Company took to the stage alongside the Royal High School Bath’s dance scholars. Girls performed solos, duets, trios and in groups using their own choreography. Students from Years 5 and 6 from the Prep School joined Senior School students to perform their own dances.

Dance at Royal High School Bath is extremely popular, and is taught in PE lessons and as an additional subject after school for GCSE students. Additional Co-Curricular clubs and groups take place throughout the week, and students often form their own groups. Lessons at the Senior School are held in the Performing Arts space and in a specialist Dance Studio. The girls benefit from top quality facilities, such as barres, mirrors, a portable dance floor and a professional sound system. At the Prep School, the girls have a dedicated mirrored dance studio, and Dance Teacher, Miss Bazley explains: “Dance is such a popular activity here and we are lucky to have our own space to practice and a huge range of performance opportunities for the girls to participate.”

Miss Kovacs, Dance Subject Leader at Royal High Senior School, said: “A huge congratulations to all the girls involved in the production of ‘Dancing through the pages’. The girls have been dedicated in creating and rehearsing their own choreographies and rehearsing group dances with enthusiasm and professionalism. It was a real joy to be able to demonstrate such a passion for dance from across the whole school.”

The Royal High School Bath offers a range of specialist scholarships, and Dance is one of these and available to students in Years 7, 9 and 12. This year’s Scholarship application deadlines are October 2022 (Sixth Form), November 2022 (Year 9) and January 2023 (Year 7).
