Year 8 Withington pupil, Beth, recently celebrated achieving ABRSM Grade 8 in piano, adding to her existing ABRSM Grade 8 cello qualification, completed in January 2022. Beth attained a high merit with the exact same mark in both examinations, which are equivalent to an A Level and are typically taken by students post-GCSE. The total qualification time per Grade 8 is recommended at 320 hours, demonstrating a high level of commitment from Beth, who was also required to pass the additional Music Theory examination in order to complete the ABRSM examinations at Grade 5 (or above).
Since joining Withington in Year 7, Beth has immersed herself in music activity and is a member of the senior choir and various ensembles, including the Senior Orchestra where she performs alongside pupils in Year 10 and above. Mrs Gilly Sargent, Withington’s Director of Music, said: “To already have achieved Grade 8 Cello and now a high merit in her Grade 8 Piano is an amazing achievement, but in Year 8, simply outstanding!”
