King Edward VI High School celebrates another year of top-level GCSE results

25 August 2022

King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) is celebrating top-level GCSE results which are the culmination of its students’ hard work, resilience and determination over the last few years.

An impressive 65% of grades at the Birmingham independent school were 9s, 84% were 9/8s, and 95% were 9-7s. Of the cohort of 92 students, 22 (24%) achieved 10 GCSEs at grade 9.

The results show consistency with those of the last two Covid-disrupted years, when there were no public examinations, and are above those of 2019 when exams were last sat.

Kirsty von Malaisé, KEHS Principal, said: “Our Upper Fifth students should be rightly proud of their amazing GCSE results, coming as they do at the end of a few very trying years which were punctuated by Covid-related disruptions and the related pressures of being a young person and a GCSE student during this time.

“We are not only delighted with the headline figures, and how consistent they are with those of the last two years, but also with the breadth of successes that our students have achieved. Pursuing a Modern Foreign Language to GCSE level is a compulsory part of the KEHS curriculum, and to see 89% grade 9s in French is impressive. English Language, which is taken by all our students, achieved an outstanding 73% grade 9s, and Physics was taken by 85 students, and recorded an exceptional 66% grade 9s. Geography has once again seen phenomenal top grades: 88% at grade 9.

“Whilst our students have a strong work ethic, they have also continued to contribute much to the exceptional co-curricular life of our school, be that in music, drama, sport, art, trips and exchanges or the many clubs and societies on offer. Achievement and experiences in these areas builds confidence and perspective, and makes this school a distinctive community.

“We look forward to our Upper Fifth moving on to life in our Sixth Form and seeing them flourish further.”

KEHS prides itself on outstanding teaching through a forward-looking and challenging curriculum, and is looking forward to its first GCSE cohort embarking on their GCSE Computing and GCSE Design and Technology studies next month, with GCSE Mandarin set to be introduced in September 2023. GCSE PE was introduced in September 2021.

Last week, KEHS announced its best-ever A Level results, with 66% of grades at A*, 91% at A*/A and 96% at A* – B.
