Creative writing has long been an established strength at FHS, and we were delighted to see a high level of participation in our Pupil Response Competition to the TSBA Book Awards. For the two terms prior to the awards, our Bookies and Cookies club shadowed the books that had been shortlisted, motivating club attendees to write book reviews of or make creative projects inspired by the shortlisted titles. All pupils had the chance to meet the authors at the exhibition after the ceremony, where they were thrilled to get their books signed and share their responses with the delighted authors.
Particular congratulations are in order to Kayla, who took 1st place in the final for her book review of Hurricane Summer by Natasha Bromfield, which you can read here! This is an absolutely incredible achievement and we are so proud of her. She wasn’t actually a member of the club shadowing the award; she simply loved the book and approached our Head of Libraries independently about entering her review, showing real initiative. She was also extremely kind and helpful throughout the trip, really working to support the younger pupils in attendance. Huge congratulations to Kayla, who is a pupil who really personifies our values of humility, compassion, kindness and gratitude, and to all the other talented and imaginative pupils who entered the competition, and thank you to Miss O’Connor, Ms Shevah and the English Department, all of whom have mentored and inspired the girls to pursue their creative writing careers.
