South Hampstead High School GDST

Established in 1876, South Hampstead High School GDST is one of the UK’s leading schools, welcoming girls aged 4 to 18 from across London.

Excellent academic results and prestigious leavers’ destinations place it amongst the country’s top schools, but there is much more to an education than the girls’ headline achievements.

South Hampstead is a forward-looking school that aims to open doors, hearts and minds, empowering girls to prepare for life and work in a rapidly-changing world. Great emphasis is placed on enabling every girl not just to succeed but to thrive – intellectually and personally.

There is a strong focus on bringing in the outside world, engaging with the local community and fostering a culture of kindness and curiosity. Throughout their time at South Hampstead, pupils benefit from a huge range of academic enrichment opportunities – lectures, competitions, charity work, expeditions – that combine to ignite a genuine joy in learning.

Success is underpinned by a solid bedrock of pastoral care and personal development opportunities. South Hampstead is warm community where girls can be themselves and make friends for life; it also provides outstanding breadth of opportunity in its curricular and co-curricular programme to open pupils’ minds to a myriad of possibilities.

The school aims to instil in pupils a sense of purpose, pride and determination and the belief that they can compete on the biggest of stages, so they can go on to live, work and lead in tomorrow’s world.

Bursaries & Scholarships

The Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) has its own means-tested Bursary Scheme, providing every girl who is bright and keen the opportunity to fulfil her potential, regardless of financial circumstances. Bursaries are available at 11+ (Year 7) and 16+ (Sixth Form) entry and awarded on academic merit; the value (up to 100%) is related to the income and financial resources of the candidate’s family.

A number of scholarships are available at 11+ (Year 7) and 16+ (Sixth Form). Academic Scholarships are awarded on outstanding performance in the entrance examination at 11+ or 16+; all girls are automatically considered and no separate application is needed. 11+ Music and Sports Scholarships and Sixth Form Art, Music and Drama Scholarships are prestigious awards that require a separate application.

Girls must show a particular aptitude and talent in the relevant discipline and will be assessed by the appropriate department – applicants must also meet the required academic standards in entrance examination process.

Scholarships vary in value but usually offer some reduction on fees.
