Bruton School for Girls has welcomed almost 100 girls from local Primary Schools in Somerset and Dorset to its popular ‘Girls in Science’ days. The visiting girls alongside specialist science staff from BSG extracted DNA from bananas in Biology, created bath bombs in Chemistry and made their own gliders in Physics. Applying the principles of science in a practical and fun way gave the girls a day to remember and helped reinforce their science lessons back at school.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects continue to be under-represented by women, as Judy Marsh, Head of Chemistry, says: “Science in all its forms is hugely exciting and the principals underpin so much of our world. Research shows that girls are often put off by pursuing science subjects, however, our all-girl approach ensures these stereotypes are broken down. We hope that the girls who attended came away realising that science is exciting and most definitely not a ‘boys’ subject! Over 70% of our Sixth Form girls study at least one STEM subject, which illustrates the success of studying in an all-girls environment.”
Girls in Science Days are held annually at Bruton School for Girls and are open to any primary school.
