Blackheath High School GDST

The dynamic in a girls-only setting is different: there is strong evidence that girls are more likely to boldly take intellectual risks, adopt leadership roles, and be less inclined to conform to stereotypes. Here, every subject is a girls’ subject.

Preparing students for the future is a key priority at Blackheath High School and research demonstrates that GDST girls leave school prepared to face the future, with the confidence to make choices and overcome barriers in a world that is far from equal. Through our bespoke pioneering Futures programme we strive to equip every student, from Nursery to Sixth Form, with the key skills, knowledge and confidence they need to flourish and succeed in the world – as predicted by the World Economic Forum as essential for success in an ever-evolving, digitally interconnected global landscape. Marking the launch of its Futures programme in early 2024 Blackheath High hosted an innovative GDST-wide conference focused on ‘AI Through the Lens of a Girl’ conference.

Blackheath High is an ‘Excellent in all areas’ school (ISI), where academic aspirations are brought together with a diverse range of subjects, as we encourage students to follow their passions – including additional offerings of GCSE subjects in Astronomy, Statistics, Psychology and Classical Greek. We are hugely proud to be celebrating our best-ever GCSE and A-level results in 2024, as well as becoming a Finalist in Independent Girls’ School of the Year 2024. Right from our Early Years curriculum we carefully balance learning with fun as girls explore, investigate and engage with the world around them. Our purpose-built nursery playground and Forest School are designed to spark the imagination, curiosity, resilience, and adventurous spirit that we embody.

Beyond academic excellence, our vibrant co-curricular programme offers opportunities for everyone, from charity fundraising and devising sustainability projects, to participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and supporting the local community. Students can take part in LAMDA classes, create and perform in concerts, fashion shows and drama productions, take part in clubs from debating to politics, sports to film making.

We offer a hugely varied, vibrant sports programme, designed to foster a lifelong love of sport and to nurture both physical and mental health. As well as timetabled Sports lessons, competitive fixtures and specialist coaches give students access to elite sports opportunities.

Student wellbeing underpins all that we do at Blackheath High School. Staff know students as individuals; girls form strong, supportive friendships; trust is the backbone of our school. Our dedicated pastoral team is well placed to deal with any issues that may arise, supported by our School Nurse and a full-time Counsellor.

We have two school sites, a Junior and Senior school. Both are located just a stone’s throw away from Canary Wharf and close to central London, benefiting from all that our capital city has to offer while enjoying the village atmosphere and extensive heathland of Blackheath itself. We are adjacent to Greenwich Royal Park, 13 acres of open space with extraordinary views across the River Thames to St Paul’s. The Park is home to the Royal Observatory and the Greenwich Maritime Royal Heritage Site.

For our Sixth Form Scholarship Programme, additional places are available for Academic, Art, Drama, and Music Scholars and are open both to new joiners, and to those moving up from the Senior School. Additionally, there are a range of smaller and honorary academic prizes available for exceptional potential in the Sixth Form These prizes are very prestigious, and looked upon favourably by universities. Sixth Form students may hold multiple scholarships and prizes, as long as they only hold one Subject-Specific Scholarship and the total discount does not exceed 50% of the published fees.

Bursaries
We offer a number of bursaries to girls entering Year 7, Year 9 or Year 12. These are both means-tested and dependent on the applicant’s academic potential, and are extremely competitive. The value of the bursary is dependent upon the income and financial resources of the applicant’s family, but can represent as much as full fees. A partial bursary may be granted to a girl who has won a subject scholarship, with the combined value never exceeding the full fees. Eligibility for bursaries is re-assessed each academic year to take into consideration changes in financial circumstances.
