Be Extraordinary

Welcome to Nottingham Girls’ High School, a friendly and welcoming place where girls feel secure and supported – the perfect environment for learning. We encourage our girls to think creatively, set themselves high standards and to work hard to achieve their goals, and our success in achieving this has not gone unnoticed by the Good Schools Guide:

“This is a first rate, 21st century offer with academic rigour but informal in feel, without establishment stuffiness. The new strapline is ‘Be Extraordinary’ and everyone believes they can”
Good Schools Guide, 2016

We know that choosing the right school for your daughter is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a parent. You want her to leave home happy and enthusiastic in the morning, and return energised and enriched at the end of the day – and so do we. From the onset of school right through to the Sixth Form and beyond, your daughter will receive outstanding support – from her teachers; from all of our superb pastoral and support staff; from current AND former pupils, and of course from the GDST itself. There will always be advice on hand and a friendly face to turn to – we recognise the importance of this.

We passionately believe, as we have always done, in a girls-only education, where your daughter can belong yet be an individual; challenged but not distracted; be herself or anybody she wants to be. We know this approach works as our exam results are among the best in the country, but we believe education for life involves much more. Our school places a big emphasis on the qualities that lead to a happy, successful and fulfilling life: personal and social values, consideration for others, leadership, teamwork, confidence, self-discipline and resourcefulness.

Close links between home and school are really important to us too and we look to maintain close relationships with you throughout your daughter’s time here, involving you wherever possible. By talking to and listening to you, we can ensure your daughter makes the most of her talents and opportunities, and emerges from here a credit to all of us.

Gifted & Talented

Across the whole school, our girls are stretched and challenged at levels appropriate to their year group. We recognise those who excel and provide opportunities for them to reach the highest standards in their areas of interest and skill so that they are always at the top of their game.

Not only are our lessons designed to provide this opportunity, but our many and varied enrichment clubs and extra-curricular activities provide that bit extra. There are also competitions and challenges across the school, and across the GDST, at which our girls are regular participants. We greatly encourage participation in ANY academic and sporting competitions, local and national, and our girls have amassed many prizes and awards over the years.

We believe that a happy girl is a successful girl and that all girls, regardless of their different learning capabilities and needs, should have the same opportunities to succeed.

Our Head of Learning Support, Cate Harvey, specialises in dyslexia and autism and has many years’ experience working with pupils with special educational needs. In addition to this, our School Nurse, Brenda Williams, is vastly experienced and works closely with Cate to ensure the physical and emotional wellbeing of each and every girl.

Our approach is to identify any issues as early as possible and make sure that girls with are listened to and feel valued members of the school community. We integrate pupils as fully as possible into life at the school and offer full access to a broad, balanced and relevant education, including an appropriate curriculum.

Bursaries & Scholarships

We believe that our quality education should be accessible to bright, talented girls from all backgrounds, whatever their financial circumstance. Although we can’t fund everyone, we try to support those who’d benefit most, so if you’re interested in a place for your daughter, but your family is not in a position to cover the full fees, you may be eligible for a bursary through the Girls’ Day School Trust Bursary Scheme, available for girls joining Year 7 or Year 12. More information is available in their booklet.
Scholarships are our way of recognising and rewarding incredibly talented girls who we believe will go far in life. It’s possible to have a scholarship supplemented by a bursary.
