Leicester High School for Girls

At Leicester High School for Girls, we specialise in bringing out the very best in girls aged 3-18.

We educate girls to their full potential, whilst building their confidence through a wide range of opportunities; thus Giving Girls Education, Confidence and Opportunity.

Leicester High School is one of the academically highest achieving schools in the country, but this is only one aspect of what the School offers. Our pastoral care is also outstanding; we are committed to developing the whole person.

One of our special qualities is that we educate girls continuously from age 3 when they enter our Early Years, to Sixth Form when they leave as fully-rounded, confident young women who can take their place in the world of the 21st Century.

Our Christian ethos is at the heart of what makes this School so special and we embrace pupils from all faiths and none. Girls are encouraged in the traditional values of honesty, responsibility and self-reliance, to have strong moral values and codes of behaviour, coupled with an awareness of others. These traditional values are balanced with a progressive curriculum to fully prepare the girls for university and beyond.

We are not a large School so everyone is someone. Girls can be themselves at Leicester High. Voices and opinions are heard and listened to with the result that self-confidence is developed. They discover and fulfil their potential and leave us believing that there is nothing they cannot do. The positive impact of education in an all-girls’ environment lasts for life.

Girls make friendships that last a lifetime and leave us with broad horizons and a global outlook. Our pastoral care, extensive extra-curricular programme and the many opportunities we provide for your daughter to explore the ‘real world’ beyond the school gates all help her to develop into a self-assured and capable young woman, possessing the academic and life skills to fulfil her potential.

We are very proud of our local and national reputation for excellence in both academic and pastoral areas. Our latest full inspection report was outstanding; indeed we were judged ‘Excellent’ in all categories.

Bursaries & Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded for exceptional academic performance and the potential to excel. They are not means-tested and those funded by the School provide between 5% – 25% of the School fees. We also work closely with the Sir Thomas White Trust, who have provided us with several Sixth Form Scholarships of up to 100% over recent years.

Being a scholar of the School carries with it expectations and responsibility. Scholars are expected to take a responsible approach to their academic studies and participate fully in the life of the School.

The following scholarships are offered by the Senior School:
The Headmaster’s Scholarships for Year 7 entry – For existing Year 6 students or those entering Year 7

Leicester High School for Girls has a long history of providing academic scholarships to selected girls joining Year 7. Our Headmaster’s Scholarships, provide support towards fees from Years 7-11, to girls joining the School in Year 7 in September 2021. These Scholarships are also open to existing Year 6 students who will be joining Year 7.

Scholarships of between 5% and 25% of School fees are awarded for outstanding performance in the January Entrance Examination.

The January Entrance Examination for 2021 entry, is scheduled to take place on Thursday 14 January 2021. The deadline to register for the Examination is Wednesday 6 January 2021.

The Headmaster’s Scholarships are not means-tested, however, we are keen to encourage applications from families who may not currently be considering an independent education. Therefore, depending on financial circumstances and fund availability, bursaries to cover up to 100% of fees are also available.

The Sir Thomas White Scholarship for Sixth Form
For the past six years, girls entering the Sixth Form from a state school, and resident in Leicestershire or Rutland, have been invited to apply for a Sir Thomas White grant, which is 100% fees-only funded for two years. The School has had seven Sir Thomas White Scholars in recent years. The scholarship is for an academic girl who would not have the means to pay for a place normally.

The application is means-tested, and a bursary form needs to be completed. A personal statement, grades and references from your current school will be requested and shortlisted girls will be invited to attend an initial interview with the Head of Sixth Form and the Subject Heads of her chosen A Levels.

If successful at this initial interview, girls will be invited to attend a final interview with the Headmaster before being put forward for an interview with the trustees of the Sir Thomas White Trust.

The application process for 2021 starters will be confirmed by Sir Thomas White shortly. Applications are normally submitted in January/February, with interviews taking place in March.

Music Scholarships and Awards
For existing Year 6-13 students or those entering Years 6-13 in September 2021

Music Scholarships provide funding towards additional music tuition. There are different levels of award with varying values up to £1,000 for promising and committed musicians in Years 6-13. Auditions take place annually, usually in January, and will be awarded to pupils who demonstrate particular musical potential and aptitude.

During the audition, girls will be asked to play two contrasting pieces on their first instrument and one piece on a second instrument. Aural tests will also form part of the audition.

For full details of the audition process, and for further details regarding Music Scholarships, please email the Head of Music, Mr Matt Haynes, on m.haynes@leicesterhigh.co.uk

Bursaries
Applications can now be made for September 2021 entry.

Bursaries provide means-tested assistance for families who otherwise would not be able to consider an independent education for their daughter.

Bursaries are available from Year 6 onwards. The maximum amount of support with fees is 100%. To find out more about bursaries, please see the policy and application form. If you have any queries about the application form, please contact Mrs Edwena Mackay, the Bursar on 0116 270 5338.

Unfortunately, the number of applications for bursary assistance each year exceeds the funding the School is able to provide; therefore bursary funding is not guaranteed.

You can download our bursary policy and application form from our website.

Bursary applications should be sent to:

The Bursar, Mrs Edwena Mackay, Leicester High School for Girls, 454 London Road, Leicester LE2 2PP
